This crucial part-time role is more than just directing traffic; you will be a friendly, visible presence, a guardian, and a vital link in our school community, fostering a secure environment for our young learners. As a School Crossing Guard, you will be responsible for managing pedestrian and vehicular traffic at designated crosswalks during peak school hours, ensuring that students, parents, and community members can navigate busy intersections with confidence. Your presence will provide peace of mind, educate young pedestrians on safety, and contribute directly to the positive atmosphere of our school and neighborhood. This role requires unwavering attention, a strong sense of responsibility, and a warm, approachable demeanor. Join us in making a tangible difference in the daily lives of our students and their families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely guide children, parents, and other pedestrians across designated streets and intersections during school arrival and dismissal times.
  • Control vehicular traffic to ensure safe passage for pedestrians, using appropriate hand signals and stop signs.
  • Educate children on safe crossing practices and pedestrian safety rules.
  • Maintain a high level of visibility and awareness of surroundings, anticipating potential hazards.
  • Report any unusual incidents, unsafe conditions, or suspicious activities to school administration.
  • Arrive punctually for all assigned shifts, rain or shine, and be prepared to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Maintain a positive, friendly, and professional demeanor with students, parents, school staff, and the public.
  • Wear provided safety gear (e.g., reflective vest, stop sign paddle) at all times while on duty.
  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to all relevant traffic laws, pedestrian safety guidelines, and school district policies.

Required Skills

  • Excellent observational skills and unwavering attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with children and adults.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform duties in various weather conditions.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Ability to remain calm, authoritative, and focused in potentially high-traffic or dynamic situations.
  • Unwavering commitment to child safety and community service.
  • Basic understanding of traffic laws and pedestrian safety principles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in traffic control, public safety, or working with children in an educational setting.
  • Familiarity with the Mission District area and local traffic patterns around the school.
  • Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) is a significant advantage, given our diverse community.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

Perks & Benefits

  • Make a direct and meaningful impact on student safety and community well-being every school day.
  • Enjoy a consistent, part-time schedule that aligns perfectly with school hours, ideal for those seeking work-life balance.
  • Become an integral and respected member of the Cesar Chavez Elementary School and broader SFUSD community.
