We are seeking a diligent and highly professional Gatekeeper to join our essential operations team at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In this crucial front-line role, you will serve as the initial point of contact for all visitors, staff, and external partners entering our prestigious coastal campus in La Jolla. The Gatekeeper is instrumental in maintaining the security, order, and welcoming atmosphere of our world-class facilities, ensuring that all access protocols are strictly adhered to while providing exceptional service reflective of our institution’s reputation. Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and control vehicular and pedestrian access to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus, verifying identities and authorization.
- Greet visitors warmly, ascertain their purpose of visit, and direct them to the appropriate departments or personnel.
- Issue temporary access passes and maintain accurate visitor logs, adhering strictly to institutional security policies.
- Operate and monitor security equipment, including CCTV, access control systems, and communication devices.
- Respond promptly to alarms, emergencies, and unusual incidents, following established protocols and coordinating with security personnel and emergency services as needed.
- Conduct routine patrols of designated areas to ensure safety and identify potential security risks or maintenance issues.
- Provide clear and concise information regarding campus policies, directions, and general inquiries.
- Manage incoming phone calls and direct them efficiently.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional gatehouse or reception area.
- Prepare detailed incident reports and daily activity logs.
- Collaborate effectively with campus security, facilities, and administrative teams.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in a customer service, security, or front-desk role
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with diverse individuals
- High level of integrity, discretion, and a professional demeanor
- Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure, particularly during emergencies
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite) and the ability to learn new software quickly
- Exceptional attention to detail and observational skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a security or access control role within a large institutional or corporate environment
- Familiarity with access control systems and CCTV monitoring
- Basic First Aid and CPR certification
- Knowledge of UC San Diego or Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus layout and departments
- Bilingual abilities (e.g., Spanish) are a plus
