Job Description
Are you a highly motivated, energetic, and dedicated individual with a passion for youth development through sports? The Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware, Middletown Unit, is seeking an enthusiastic Athletic Coach to inspire, mentor, and guide our young members. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for developing and implementing engaging athletic programs that promote physical fitness, teamwork, and positive character traits among children and adolescents of various age groups and skill levels. You will organize and supervise a diverse range of sports activities, including but not limited to basketball, soccer, flag football, and track & field, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and fun environment for all participants. This role goes beyond just teaching sports; it’s about being a positive role model, fostering self-esteem, and instilling a lifelong love for physical activity and healthy competition. The Athletic Coach will work closely with other program staff, parents, and volunteers to ensure a holistic development experience for our members. You will be instrumental in teaching fundamental athletic skills, promoting fair play, and encouraging personal growth, helping our youth discover their potential both on and off the field. Key Responsibilities
- Design, plan, and implement age-appropriate athletic programs and activities for youth of varying skill levels.
- Coach and supervise sports teams and individual participants during practices, games, and tournaments.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants by maintaining a safe playing environment and adhering to all Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware safety policies and procedures.
- Develop and teach fundamental sports skills, rules, and strategies.
- Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, and positive character development among all members.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor to youth, fostering their self-esteem and confidence.
- Manage and maintain athletic equipment and facilities.
- Communicate effectively with club members, parents, and other staff members regarding program schedules, participant progress, and any concerns.
- Assist with program registration, record-keeping, and reporting as required.
- Collaborate with other Club staff to integrate athletic programs with overall youth development goals.
- Organize and officiate scrimmages, games, and internal competitions.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 1 year of experience coaching or leading sports activities for youth (ages 6-18)
- Strong knowledge of various sports rules, techniques, and safety protocols
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
- Ability to motivate and inspire young people from diverse backgrounds
- First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
- Demonstrated ability to manage groups of children effectively and maintain discipline in a positive manner
- Patience, enthusiasm, and a genuine passion for youth development through sports
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, or a related field
- Current coaching certifications from recognized sports organizations (e.g., NFHS, US Youth Soccer, USA Basketball)
- Experience working in a Boys & Girls Club or similar youth-serving organization
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) is a plus
- Experience in program development and curriculum design for youth sports
