Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain sterile surgical environments, ensuring all equipment and supplies are readily available, properly sterilized, and functioning correctly.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon during procedures by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment correctly, efficiently, and at the appropriate time.
- Maintain a sterile field throughout surgical procedures, adhering strictly to aseptic techniques and infection control policies and procedures.
- Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, and sterile draping procedures with the surgical team.
- Perform accurate surgical counts (sponges, sharps, instruments) with the circulating nurse to ensure patient safety and prevent retained surgical items.
- Handle surgical specimens according to established protocols, ensuring proper labeling and delivery for pathological examination.
- Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization post-procedure, ensuring proper handling and care of delicate equipment.
- Assist in transporting patients to and from the operating room, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Monitor and maintain surgical equipment, reporting any malfunctions or issues promptly to the appropriate personnel.
- Participate actively in pre-operative briefings and post-operative debriefings to enhance team communication and patient care.
- Provide emotional support and comfort to patients prior to surgery as appropriate, fostering a calm and reassuring environment.
Required Skills
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Current certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or an equivalent recognized credential.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire or within a specified timeframe.
- Demonstrated proficiency in aseptic technique and sterile procedures.
- Strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively and remain calm in a fast-paced, high-pressure, and critical care environment.
- Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and critical thinking abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Surgical Technologist in an acute care or hospital setting.
- Experience across various surgical specialties (e.g., Orthopedics, General Surgery, OB/GYN, Cardiovascular, Neuro-Surgery).
- Advanced certifications or specialized training in specific surgical areas.
