Steel Dynamics, Inc. is seeking an exceptionally talented and visionary Vice President of Engineering to lead our engineering initiatives from our Fort Wayne headquarters. This critical leadership role will be instrumental in shaping the future of our manufacturing processes, product development, and operational efficiency across all our divisions. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker with a proven track record of managing complex engineering projects, driving innovation, and leading high-performing teams in a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment. You will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of engineering, including process engineering, project management, capital expenditure planning, and the implementation of advanced manufacturing technologies. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the overall engineering strategy in alignment with Steel Dynamics' business objectives and growth plans.
- Lead, mentor, and expand a diverse team of engineering professionals across multiple disciplines and locations.
- Oversee the planning, execution, and successful completion of major capital projects, ensuring adherence to budget, schedule, and quality standards.
- Drive innovation in process engineering, automation, and advanced manufacturing technologies to enhance operational efficiency, product quality, and cost-effectiveness.
- Establish and maintain robust engineering standards, best practices, and safety protocols across all facilities.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, R&D, sales, and supply chain teams to support new product development and optimize existing processes.
- Manage the departmental budget, allocate resources effectively, and identify opportunities for cost savings and investment returns.
- Evaluate and integrate new technologies and engineering solutions to maintain Steel Dynamics' competitive advantage.
- Provide technical leadership and strategic guidance on critical engineering challenges and opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant industry regulations, environmental standards, and safety requirements.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Industrial preferred).
- Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in engineering leadership roles within a heavy industrial, manufacturing, or steel production environment.
- Proven experience in managing large-scale capital projects from conception to completion.
- Strong understanding of process optimization, automation, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop large engineering teams.
- Exceptional strategic planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in project management software and CAD/CAM tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Engineering or a related technical field.
- MBA or equivalent business management experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
- Prior experience in the steel or metals industry.
