Job Description
We are seeking a meticulous and dedicated Medical Coder to join our dynamic healthcare team at St. Mary Mercy Livonia. As a Medical Coder, you will play a crucial role in the revenue cycle by accurately translating patient care information into standardized codes used for billing, data collection, and statistical reporting. Your expertise will ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines, optimize reimbursement, and contribute to the integrity of our health information systems. This position requires a keen eye for detail, a thorough understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and various coding systems (ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II). You will work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to clarify documentation and ensure all services rendered are appropriately coded. Key Responsibilities
- Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes to diagnoses and procedures for professional and/or hospital services.
- Review and analyze patient medical records, including physician notes, operative reports, and diagnostic results, to extract all necessary information for coding.
- Ensure all coded services and diagnoses are supported by clinical documentation and meet official coding guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Query physicians and other healthcare providers for clarification of documentation when needed to ensure accurate code assignment.
- Stay current with changes in coding guidelines, conventions, and regulations (e.g., CMS, AMA) through continuous education and professional development.
- Collaborate with the billing department to resolve coding-related claim denials and rejections.
- Participate in departmental audits and quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
- Utilize various coding software and electronic health record (EHR) systems efficiently.
Required Skills
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) through AAPC or AHIMA.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in medical coding, preferably in a hospital or multi-specialty clinic setting.
- Proficient in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain high accuracy and productivity standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or a related field.
- Experience with Epic EHR system.
- Additional certifications such as Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC).
- Experience with cardiology or other specialty-specific coding.
- Familiarity with compliance and reimbursement methodologies.
