Job Description
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Potter/Ceramicist to join our creative team at Liyafa Palace Hotel. This unique role offers an exciting opportunity to apply your artistic talents within a dynamic hospitality environment. As our in-house Potter/Ceramicist, you will be instrumental in designing, creating, and producing bespoke ceramic pieces that enhance the aesthetic and cultural appeal of our hotel. From decorative vases and dinnerware to unique art installations and guest souvenirs, your work will directly contribute to our guests’ experience, offering them a taste of authentic Katsina artistry. This position demands a high level of craftsmanship, creativity, and the ability to work independently while also collaborating with our interior design and events teams. Key Responsibilities
- Design and create a diverse range of ceramic items, including functional dinnerware, decorative pieces, art installations, and bespoke souvenirs for hotel guests and internal use.
- Manage the entire pottery process from clay preparation, shaping (wheel-throwing and hand-building), trimming, and drying to glazing and firing.
- Develop unique glazes and surface decoration techniques that reflect local Katsina artistry and hotel branding.
- Maintain the pottery studio, including equipment (kilns, wheels), tools, and materials, ensuring a safe and organized workspace.
- Monitor and control kiln firing processes for optimal results and energy efficiency.
- Collaborate with the hotel's interior design, events, and marketing teams to conceptualize and produce ceramics for specific projects or themes.
- Potentially conduct workshops or demonstrations for hotel guests, showcasing local pottery traditions and engaging them in the craft.
- Source and manage raw materials, ensuring quality and sustainability.
- Document and maintain an inventory of produced items and materials used.
Required Skills
- Proven expertise in various pottery techniques, including wheel-throwing and hand-building.
- Strong understanding of clay types, glazes, and firing processes.
- Exceptional artistic vision and design skills with a keen eye for detail and aesthetics.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in studio maintenance and equipment operation (e.g., kilns, pottery wheels).
- Excellent problem-solving skills for technical challenges in ceramic production.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
