Job Description
We are actively seeking an experienced, dynamic, and passionately dedicated Coffee Farm Manager to spearhead and optimize the cultivation and production efforts at Rwagashora Coffee Washing Station. This is a critical leadership role that encompasses the comprehensive oversight of all facets of coffee farming, beginning from meticulous nursery management and strategic planting, extending through precise pest and disease management, to efficient harvesting, advanced processing, and stringent quality control. The ideal candidate will be a proactive, hands-on leader, possessing profound knowledge in contemporary and sustainable agricultural practices, effective pest and disease management strategies, and innovative coffee processing techniques. You will be primarily responsible for significantly optimizing farm productivity, consistently ensuring the attainment of the highest international standards of coffee quality, and diligently implementing innovative farming methods that are in complete alignment with our profound environmental and social commitments. Key Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise all day-to-day operations of the coffee farm, including planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease control, and harvesting.
- Develop and implement comprehensive farm management plans, including crop cycles, soil health management, and yield optimization strategies.
- Oversee the coffee nursery, ensuring healthy seedling production and successful transplanting.
- Train, supervise, and mentor farm staff and cooperative members on best agricultural practices, safety protocols, and quality standards.
- Implement and monitor sustainable farming practices, including organic certifications (if applicable) and environmental conservation initiatives.
- Manage post-harvest processes at the washing station, ensuring proper sorting, pulping, fermentation, washing, and drying techniques to achieve optimal coffee quality.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all farm activities, production yields, input usage, and labor costs.
- Conduct regular and thorough inspections of the farm to identify and proactively address issues promptly.
- Prepare regular, comprehensive reports on farm performance, challenges encountered, and strategic recommendations for improvement to the cooperative management.
- Ensure strict compliance with all relevant agricultural regulations and certifications (e.g., Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, UTZ).
- Collaborate effectively with agronomists and other agricultural experts to research and introduce new technologies and practices.
Required Skills
- Minimum 4 years of proven, hands-on experience in coffee farm management or a similar senior agricultural leadership role.
- Profound knowledge of coffee cultivation, advanced agronomy, effective pest and disease management, and sustainable farming practices.
- Demonstrable experience with coffee post-harvest processing techniques (both wet and dry methods).
- Exceptional leadership and strong team management skills, coupled with the proven ability to motivate, train, and develop staff.
- Excellent organizational capabilities and meticulous record-keeping abilities.
- Proficiency in both Kinyarwanda and English (both written and verbal communication).
- Ability to work autonomously, demonstrate initiative, and make sound, timely decisions in a dynamic, fast-paced agricultural environment.
- Thorough understanding of agricultural machinery and equipment maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agricultural Science, or a closely related field.
- Extensive experience working with smallholder farmers or agricultural cooperatives.
- Proven knowledge of quality control standards for specialty coffee (e.g., Q Grader certification or similar quality assessment experience).
- Familiarity with financial planning and effective budgeting for farm operations.
