Job Description

We are seeking a passionate, knowledgeable, and engaging Heritage and Nature Tour Guide to join our esteemed team, operating out of our satellite presence in Utrecht, KwaZulu-Natal. This unique role offers the opportunity to connect visitors with the rich, complex history of the Anglo-Zulu War and the breathtaking natural landscapes of the region, ensuring every tour is both educational and unforgettable. As a Tour Guide at Fugitives’ Drift, you will be the face of our commitment to historical accuracy and exceptional guest service. You will lead small groups through significant battle sites, narrating the events with compelling detail and empathy, and guiding nature walks that showcase the diverse flora and fauna. Your ability to captivate an audience, manage group dynamics, and ensure the safety and comfort of all guests is paramount. This position demands not only a profound understanding of historical events and ecological systems but also a natural flair for storytelling and a genuine desire to create meaningful connections. You will be instrumental in delivering the signature Fugitives’ Drift experience, helping guests to understand the broader context of the region’s heritage, its people, and its wildlife. We are looking for an individual who is proactive, adaptable, and deeply respectful of the cultural and historical significance of our sites. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct engaging and historically accurate tours of Anglo-Zulu War battlefields, including Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift, and other relevant sites accessible from Utrecht.
  • Lead interpretive nature walks, highlighting local flora, fauna, and ecological significance.
  • Deliver compelling narratives and stories, bringing historical events and figures to life for diverse groups of guests.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all guests during tours, adhering to all safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on historical facts, ongoing research, and relevant local ecological information.
  • Assist with tour logistics, including vehicle checks, equipment preparation, and coordination with the lodge team.
  • Provide exceptional customer service, responding to guest inquiries and ensuring a positive and memorable experience.
  • Represent Fugitives' Drift Lodge with professionalism, enthusiasm, and a deep respect for the cultural and historical context.
  • Provide basic first aid when necessary and manage minor incidents effectively.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and good condition of tour vehicles and equipment.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years' professional experience as a tour guide, preferably in a historical or wildlife context.
  • In-depth knowledge of Anglo-Zulu War history and its key figures.
  • Excellent verbal communication and public speaking skills, with a talent for engaging storytelling.
  • Valid South African driver's license (Code 8/B or higher) with a clean driving record.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with diverse groups of people.
  • Physical fitness to lead walking tours and navigate uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Proficiency in English; additional local languages are a strong advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in History, Archaeology, Tourism, or Environmental Science.
  • Accreditation or certification from a recognized tourism authority (e.g., THETA, FGASA).
  • Proficiency in Zulu and/or Afrikaans.
  • Experience working with international tourists.
  • Advanced driving skills for off-road conditions.
