Job Description

ArcelorMittal South Africa seeks an experienced Legal Advisor (Corporate) for our Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal team. This pivotal role involves providing comprehensive legal advice across corporate operations, ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and internal policies. You will manage legal risks, draft and review critical corporate documentation, and offer strategic guidance to senior management on complex legal matters. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of South African corporate law, contract law, and regulatory compliance, with proven ability to operate effectively within a large industrial environment. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a leading global steel manufacturer’s strategic objectives, safeguarding its interests and promoting best legal practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise on corporate governance, company secretarial matters, and regulatory compliance.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts and legal documents.
  • Manage and mitigate legal risks in business operations and transactions.
  • Conduct legal research, preparing opinions and recommendations.
  • Liaise with external counsel and regulatory bodies.
  • Ensure adherence to competition, consumer protection, and data privacy legislation.
  • Assist in developing and implementing internal policies.
  • Provide legal training and guidance to internal teams.
  • Support dispute resolution and litigation.
  • Monitor changes in legislation and regulatory frameworks.

Required Skills

  • LLB Degree (or equivalent).
  • Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
  • Minimum 4 years post-admission experience in corporate/commercial/in-house legal roles.
  • Strong understanding of South African company law, contract law, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • High integrity, ethical conduct, and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in corporate law (e.g., LLM).
  • Experience in manufacturing, heavy industry, or mining sector.
  • Knowledge of environmental law, health & safety, or competition law.
  • Prior experience advising on M&A transactions or large corporate projects.
