Job Description

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is seeking an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and dedicated Field Guide to join our team in the Melmoth region of KwaZulu-Natal. This is an incredible opportunity for a passionate individual to contribute directly to wildlife conservation and provide unparalleled visitor experiences within one of South Africa’s most diverse and breathtaking provinces. As a Field Guide, you will be the face of our commitment to nature, leading guests on immersive journeys through our spectacular natural landscapes, sharing insights into the local flora and fauna, and educating them about the importance of ecological preservation. You will be responsible for creating memorable and safe safari and interpretive experiences, fostering a deep appreciation for the environment among visitors. This role requires not only an expert understanding of the bushveld but also exceptional communication skills, a proactive approach to guest safety, and a genuine love for sharing knowledge. You will conduct game drives, bush walks, and other guided activities, ensuring each interaction is educational, inspiring, and aligned with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s high standards of service and conservation ethics. We are looking for someone who thrives in an outdoor environment, possesses strong problem-solving abilities, and can adapt to dynamic conditions while always prioritizing the well-being of both guests and wildlife. Your contributions will be vital in supporting our mission to protect and preserve KwaZulu-Natal’s precious biodiversity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct engaging and informative game drives, bush walks, and other guided activities for guests.
  • Provide expert interpretation of the local ecology, wildlife, birdlife, and cultural history.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all guests during activities, adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge about the reserve's flora, fauna, and environmental issues.
  • Operate and maintain safari vehicles safely and responsibly, including pre-trip checks.
  • Act as an ambassador for Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, promoting conservation and responsible tourism practices.
  • Assist with basic lodge operations and guest services as needed, contributing to a positive guest experience.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development programs to enhance guiding skills and knowledge.
  • Report any unusual wildlife sightings, security concerns, or maintenance issues promptly.
  • Adhere to all Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife policies and procedures, including environmental guidelines.

Required Skills

  • FGASA Level 1 (or higher) qualification with valid lead trails qualification.
  • Valid Public Driver's Permit (PDP).
  • Current First Aid Level 3 Certificate.
  • Minimum of 1 year (12 months) experience as a Field Guide in a game reserve setting.
  • Excellent knowledge of Southern African flora, fauna, and ecology.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly and engaging demeanor.
  • Proficiency in English; additional language skills are a strong advantage.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
  • Proven ability to operate 4×4 vehicles safely and skillfully in challenging terrain.
  • Passion for wildlife conservation and environmental education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • FGASA Level 2 or more advanced guiding qualifications.
  • Specialist qualifications such as birding, tracking, or advanced rifle handling.
  • Experience working with diverse international and local clientele.
  • Additional language proficiency (e.g., Zulu, German, French).
  • A track record of positive guest feedback and high service standards.
  • Understanding of the specific biodiversity and conservation challenges in KwaZulu-Natal.
