Job Description
We are seeking a diligent, multi-skilled, and proactive Lodge Handyman to join our dedicated team at St Lucia Eco Lodge. This is a pivotal role that ensures the continuous smooth operation and pristine condition of our entire property. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks across our guest rooms, communal areas, outdoor facilities (including pool areas and gardens), and staff accommodation. You will be the go-to person for all general maintenance needs, ensuring that our lodge remains a safe, functional, aesthetically pleasing, and comfortable environment for both our guests and staff.
This role requires a proactive approach, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues efficiently and effectively. Working in an eco-lodge environment means you’ll be maintaining not just buildings, but also systems designed for minimal environmental impact, requiring a mindful, resourceful, and sustainable approach to your work. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on all lodge equipment, facilities, and systems (e.g., plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC).
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from guests and staff, identifying and resolving issues efficiently.
- Conduct minor repairs and renovations, including painting, plastering, tiling, and fixing fixtures.
- Maintain swimming pool cleanliness and chemical balance.
- Monitor and maintain water reticulation systems, including pumps and geysers.
- Ensure the proper functioning of lighting, electrical outlets, and security systems.
- Assist with grounds maintenance, including basic gardening, path upkeep, and waste management.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inventory of tools and supplies.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations and lodge policies.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of lodge events or special guest requests as needed.
- Provide basic technical support for audiovisual equipment in communal areas.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in general maintenance or handyman roles, preferably in a hospitality or lodge environment.
- Solid understanding of basic plumbing, electrical systems, carpentry, and general repairs.
- Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to maintenance.
- Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy objects and perform tasks requiring bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
- Good communication skills (verbal) in English.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid South African Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant trade certification or vocational qualification (e.g., NQF Level 2/3 in Maintenance, Plumbing, Electrical).
- Previous experience working in an eco-lodge or remote hospitality setting.
- Basic computer literacy for record-keeping.
- First Aid and Fire Fighting certification.
