WBHO Construction is actively seeking a highly skilled and exceptionally versatile Artisan, specializing in both welding and carpentry, to become a vital part of our robust project team based in Impendle, KwaZulu-Natal. This full-time position is pivotal in supporting a diverse array of construction and maintenance initiatives, playing a direct role in ensuring the structural integrity, operational safety, and high-quality finish of our projects. We are looking for a dedicated professional who can seamlessly transition between precision metal fabrication and detailed timber construction, often working autonomously or as an integral member of a small, focused project crew.
In this multifaceted role, you will be responsible for a broad spectrum of tasks. Your welding expertise will be called upon for custom steelwork, structural repairs, fabricating metal components for various applications, and maintaining construction equipment. Simultaneously, your carpentry skills will be essential for constructing intricate formwork, erecting robust timber structures, installing fixtures, and executing fine finishing work on our building projects. Key Responsibilities
- Perform various welding tasks including Arc, MIG, and TIG welding on different metal types (e.g., steel, aluminum) according to project specifications.
- Fabricate, assemble, and install metal structures, components, and pipework based on technical drawings and blueprints.
- Repair and maintain existing metal structures, machinery, and equipment, identifying and rectifying faults promptly.
- Construct, erect, install, and repair wooden structures, including concrete formwork, roof trusses, partitions, doors, windows, and interior finishes.
- Cut, shape, and smooth lumber and other carpentry materials using a variety of hand and power tools.
- Accurately interpret and work from architectural drawings, blueprints, and schematics for both welding and carpentry tasks.
- Ensure all work strictly complies with relevant safety regulations, building codes, and WBHO's quality standards.
- Conduct routine inspections of work areas, tools, and equipment to identify potential hazards and ensure operational safety.
- Collaborate effectively with other tradespeople, project managers, and supervisors to ensure project milestones are met.
- Maintain and care for all tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working order and safely stored.
- Assist in the planning and execution of project tasks, ensuring efficient use of materials and resources.
- Provide mentorship or guidance to junior team members or apprentices as required.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a qualified Welder and Carpenter, demonstrating proficiency in both trades.
- Proficiency in various welding techniques (e.g., SMAW, GMAW, GTAW) and associated equipment.
- Strong knowledge of carpentry techniques, practices, and materials for both rough and finish carpentry.
- Ability to accurately read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and detailed technical drawings.
- Extensive experience with various hand and power tools common to both welding and carpentry trades.
- Comprehensive understanding of construction site safety procedures, regulations (OHS Act), and best practices.
- Excellent physical stamina, dexterity, and the ability to work in various weather conditions and environments.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and a commitment to high-quality workmanship.
- Valid driver's license (Code B/08 or higher).
Preferred Qualifications
- NQF Level 3 or 4 Trade Test Certificate in Welding (Red Seal).
- NQF Level 3 or 4 Trade Test Certificate in Carpentry (Red Seal).
- Relevant N-courses (e.g., N3 Engineering Studies or equivalent vocational training).
- First Aid and/or advanced safety certifications.
- Previous experience working on large-scale construction or infrastructure development projects.
- Familiarity with quality control procedures and standards within the construction industry.
