Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Sawmill Operator to join our dedicated team at Bulwer Sawmills (Pty) Ltd. As a Sawmill Operator, you will be instrumental in the primary stages of timber processing, operating various pieces of machinery to transform raw logs into high-grade lumber. Your role will require precision, an acute understanding of sawmill equipment, and a steadfast commitment to safety protocols. You will monitor machine performance, conduct routine inspections, and ensure that production targets are met efficiently while maintaining the integrity and quality of our timber products. Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor various sawmill machinery, including head rigs, edgers, trimmers, and log loaders, ensuring efficient and safe timber processing.
- Perform routine pre-operation and post-operation checks and basic maintenance on machinery to ensure optimal functionality and identify potential issues.
- Adjust machinery settings to cut logs according to specified dimensions, grades, and customer orders with high precision.
- Inspect incoming logs for defects and assess suitability for processing, reporting any significant anomalies.
- Monitor the flow of timber through the sawmill, ensuring smooth operation and identifying bottlenecks.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, reporting any hazards or incidents promptly.
- Assist with the sorting, grading, and stacking of finished lumber as required.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and supervisors to achieve production goals and maintain a cohesive work environment.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of proven experience as a Sawmill Operator or in a similar heavy machinery operation role.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills related to sawmill equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret production orders, blueprints, and measurement tools accurately.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality lumber.
- Excellent understanding of safety regulations and best practices in a sawmill environment.
- Physical fitness and the ability to perform manual labour, lift heavy objects, and stand for extended periods.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work well within a team.
- Punctual, reliable, and a strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant trade certificate or vocational training in timber processing or heavy equipment operation.
- Experience with specific brands or types of sawmill machinery used in modern timber production.
- Forklift operator certification or experience.
- Basic first aid certification.
- Experience with timber grading and quality control processes.
