Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Dairy Herdsman to join our vibrant agricultural network in Colenso, KwaZulu-Natal. This is an exceptional opportunity for a passionate individual to contribute to the efficient and humane management of a high-producing dairy herd. The successful candidate will be instrumental in ensuring the health, welfare, and productivity of our dairy cows, playing a critical role in the daily operations of the farm. You will work closely with farm management, veterinarians, and a supportive team to maintain optimal milking routines, implement feeding programs, and uphold the highest standards of animal husbandry. This role demands a proactive approach, attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of the animals. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily milking operations, including setup, cleaning, and maintenance of milking equipment.
  • Monitor herd health, identify sick animals, administer basic treatments, and assist veterinarians with complex cases.
  • Implement and oversee feeding programs, ensuring accurate feed distribution and nutritional requirements are met.
  • Participate in breeding programs, including heat detection, artificial insemination, and calving assistance.
  • Maintain accurate records of herd health, breeding cycles, milk production, and treatments.
  • Ensure farm compliance with animal welfare standards, hygiene protocols, and biosecurity measures.
  • Supervise junior farm staff or assistants, providing guidance and training as needed.
  • Perform general farm duties, including pasture management, fencing, and equipment maintenance.
  • Communicate effectively with farm management, providing regular updates on herd status and operational challenges.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in dairy herd management and milking procedures.
  • Strong understanding of animal health, nutrition, and welfare practices.
  • Ability to operate and maintain dairy farming equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of breeding and calving processes.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good record-keeping and communication skills.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications
