Job Description

AFGRI Group is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Livestock Manager to oversee the comprehensive management of our diverse livestock operations in the Burgersfort, Limpopo region. This pivotal role demands a hands-on leader with a deep understanding of animal husbandry, agricultural best practices, and a strong commitment to animal welfare and productivity. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the health, well-being, and optimal performance of all livestock, implementing efficient feeding and breeding programs, and managing a dedicated team of farm workers. You will play a crucial role in maintaining meticulous records, managing budgets, and adhering to all relevant health and safety regulations, as well as environmental standards. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a progressive agricultural enterprise, utilizing modern techniques and sustainable practices to achieve high-quality livestock production. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise all daily livestock operations, including feeding, watering, breeding, and general animal care.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive animal health programs, including vaccination schedules, disease prevention, and treatment protocols.
  • Oversee breeding programs, including artificial insemination, calving/lambing, and record-keeping for genetic improvement.
  • Manage pasture and feed resources, ensuring optimal nutrition and cost-effective feed management strategies.
  • Lead, train, and supervise a team of farm workers, fostering a productive and safe working environment.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of livestock inventory, births, deaths, treatments, feed consumption, and production data.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant agricultural regulations, animal welfare standards, and environmental guidelines.
  • Manage farm equipment and infrastructure related to livestock, including maintenance and repair schedules.
  • Develop and manage budgets for livestock operations, controlling costs and maximizing profitability.
  • Implement and monitor biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of diseases.
  • Collaborate with veterinarians, nutritionists, and other agricultural experts to optimize livestock performance.
  • Provide regular reports on livestock performance and operational efficiency to senior management.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in livestock management, preferably with a diverse range of animals (cattle, sheep, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of animal health, nutrition, and breeding principles.
  • Excellent leadership, team management, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in record-keeping and data analysis for livestock operations.
  • Ability to operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment.
  • Understanding of agricultural regulations and best practices.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to make quick, informed decisions.
  • Valid South African driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Animal Science, Agricultural Management, or a related field.
  • Certification in Animal Health or Veterinary Assistance.
  • Experience with advanced breeding technologies (e.g., AI, embryo transfer).
  • Knowledge of sustainable farming practices and environmental stewardship.
  • Proficiency in agricultural management software.
