Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Forest Pest Control Specialist to join our dynamic team in Amsterdam, Mpumalanga. This critical role involves protecting our valuable forest assets from insect infestations, diseases, and other biological threats. The successful candidate will be instrumental in maintaining the ecological balance and economic viability of Sappi’s plantations through proactive monitoring, accurate identification, and the effective implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular field surveys and inspections of forest plantations to detect and assess pest and disease outbreaks.
- Accurately identify insect pests, fungal diseases, and other biological threats affecting forest health using established protocols and diagnostic tools.
- Develop and implement integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, including biological, chemical, and cultural control methods, in an environmentally responsible manner.
- Operate and maintain specialized equipment for pest control application, ensuring strict adherence to safety standards and environmental regulations.
- Collect and analyze precise data on pest populations, disease incidence, and treatment efficacy, preparing detailed technical and operational reports for management.
- Collaborate closely with forestry managers, silviculturists, and environmental specialists to develop and refine pest control programs tailored to specific forest conditions.
- Provide comprehensive training and guidance to field staff on pest identification, monitoring techniques, and safety procedures related to pest control.
- Monitor environmental conditions and assess their potential impact on pest dynamics and the effectiveness of control measures.
- Ensure full compliance with all relevant national and provincial health, safety, and environmental legislation, as well as company policies and best practices.
- Participate actively in research initiatives aimed at improving forest health and developing innovative, sustainable pest management techniques.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of practical experience in forest pest control or a closely related field, demonstrating hands-on expertise.
- Proven knowledge of forestry entomology, plant pathology, and advanced integrated pest management (IPM) principles.
- Ability to accurately identify common forest pests and diseases prevalent in Southern African commercial timber plantations.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining a variety of pest control equipment (e.g., backpack sprayers, mist blowers, vehicle-mounted applicators).
- Strong observational skills, meticulous attention to detail for field assessments, and accurate record-keeping.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical reporting and team collaboration.
- Ability to work effectively and independently in challenging outdoor conditions and often remote forest locations.
- Valid South African driver's license with a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant diploma or degree in Forestry, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
- Current certification in pesticide application and safety (e.g., P-number license in South Africa) or willingness to obtain it immediately.
- Practical experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies for mapping and data collection.
- Knowledge of indigenous forest ecosystems and their specific pest challenges in the Mpumalanga region.
- Previous experience working within Sappi's forestry operations or a similar large-scale commercial plantation management environment.
