We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious Drilling Machine Operator to join our dynamic team at our open-cast mining operations in the Wesselton, Mpumalanga area. As a Drilling Machine Operator, you will be instrumental in the preparatory stages of our mining process, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various drilling equipment, including blast hole drills. Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor drilling machinery (e.g., blast hole drills, exploration drills) safely and efficiently according to established procedures and site specifications.
- Perform daily pre-shift inspections, routine maintenance, and basic troubleshooting on drilling equipment to ensure optimal performance and identify potential faults.
- Read and interpret drilling plans, geological maps, and blasting specifications to accurately position and execute drilling activities.
- Monitor drilling parameters such as depth, pressure, rotation speed, and penetration rate, making necessary adjustments to achieve desired results.
- Ensure strict adherence to all site-specific safety regulations, environmental policies, and operational procedures.
- Record daily drilling activities, equipment performance, fuel consumption, and any encountered issues in logbooks and reports.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, geologists, and blasting teams regarding drilling progress, challenges, and upcoming tasks.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area around the drilling rig.
- Participate actively in safety meetings, training sessions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with rigging and de-rigging of equipment as required.
Required Skills
- Minimum 3 years of proven experience as a Drilling Machine Operator in an open-cast mining environment.
- Valid Machine Operator Certificate/Competency for relevant drilling equipment.
- In-depth knowledge of drilling techniques, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, drilling plans, and geological data.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills for basic equipment troubleshooting.
- Unwavering commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
- Physical fitness and ability to work in varying weather conditions and demanding environments.
- Valid Code 10 (C1) driver's license with a Public Driver's Permit (PDP).
Preferred Qualifications
- NQF Level 2 or 3 in Mining Operations, Earthmoving Equipment, or a related field.
- First Aid Certificate.
- Experience with specific drilling technologies and software (e.g., GPS-guided drilling systems).
- Blasting Assistant Certificate (advantageous).
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, in English and/or Zulu.
