Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Rail Operations Coordinator to join our critical team in Ermelo, Mpumalanga. This pivotal role involves the daily coordination and oversight of rail operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely movement of freight trains across our network. The Rail Operations Coordinator will be instrumental in optimizing train schedules, managing resources, and responding effectively to any operational disruptions. You will be at the heart of our operations, working in a fast-paced environment that demands keen attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to make quick, informed decisions. This position requires a proactive individual who can effectively liaise with various internal departments, including locomotive engineers, train managers, maintenance teams, and external stakeholders, to maintain seamless rail traffic flow. Your expertise will directly contribute to achieving our operational targets and upholding our commitment to reliability and safety. Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and control train movements across designated sections of the rail network, ensuring adherence to schedules and operational plans.
  • Coordinate with locomotive engineers, train managers, and control centres to facilitate smooth and safe train operations.
  • Manage and respond to operational disruptions, including breakdowns, delays, accidents, or adverse weather conditions, by implementing contingency plans.
  • Optimize the allocation and utilization of locomotives, wagons, and personnel to meet freight demands and operational efficiencies.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all rail safety regulations, operational procedures, and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate records of train movements, incidents, and operational performance data.
  • Generate comprehensive reports on daily operations, performance metrics, and any operational challenges.
  • Liaise effectively with internal departments such as maintenance, infrastructure, and commercial, as well as external clients and regulatory bodies.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of operational strategies to improve efficiency and service delivery.
  • Conduct regular inspections and checks to ensure the operational readiness of equipment and infrastructure.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in rail operations, logistics coordination, or a similar environment.
  • Strong understanding of rail operational procedures, safety regulations, and signaling systems.
  • Proven ability to make critical decisions under pressure and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of liaising with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in using operational management software and standard office applications (MS Office Suite).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a keen eye for detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a demanding environment.
  • A valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A National Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Transport Management, or a related field.
  • Previous experience with Transnet Freight Rail or a similar large-scale rail operator.
  • Knowledge of South African rail network specifics and freight commodities.
  • Certification in rail operational safety management.
  • Experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems related to logistics or transport.
