Job Description

AFGRI Ltd, a cornerstone of South Africa’s agricultural sector and a diversified food company, is actively seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Fleet Manager to spearhead our vital transport operations in Bethal, Mpumalanga. Our robust operational framework is heavily reliant on an efficiently managed and impeccably maintained fleet of vehicles, making the role of Fleet Manager absolutely critical to our ongoing success and strategic objectives.

As the Fleet Manager, you will be entrusted with the end-to-end management of AFGRI’s diverse vehicle fleet, ranging from light commercial vehicles to heavy-duty trucks and specialized agricultural transport. Your primary mission will be to guarantee optimal operational performance, maximize cost-effectiveness, uphold stringent compliance standards, and champion a culture of unwavering safety across all our transport activities within the Bethal region and its extended service areas. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the entire fleet operation, including scheduling, dispatching, routing, and vehicle allocation to meet operational demands.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive preventative maintenance programs, overseeing repairs, servicing, and inspections to ensure vehicle reliability and longevity.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all national and local transport laws, safety regulations, and company policies, minimizing risks and promoting a safe working environment.
  • Monitor and analyse fuel consumption, vehicle utilization, and operational costs, implementing strategies to improve efficiency and reduce expenditure.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate fleet personnel, including drivers and workshop staff, fostering a highly skilled and motivated team.
  • Manage the fleet budget effectively, including procurement of new vehicles, disposal of old assets, and negotiation with suppliers for parts and services.
  • Implement and manage vehicle tracking, telematics, and fleet management software systems to optimize operations and gather performance data.
  • Develop and enforce robust fleet safety programs, conducting accident investigations and implementing corrective actions to prevent future incidents.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of vehicle history, maintenance, licensing, and operational costs for reporting and compliance purposes.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on fleet performance, budget adherence, and efficiency metrics to senior management.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 5 years) in a Fleet Management role, preferably within the agricultural, logistics, or heavy-duty transport sectors.
  • In-depth knowledge of vehicle mechanics, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair procedures for diverse vehicle types.
  • Comprehensive understanding of South African transport legislation, road safety regulations, and environmental compliance standards.
  • Exceptional leadership, team management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in fleet management software, GPS tracking systems, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, control costs, and negotiate effectively with suppliers and service providers.
  • Valid South African driver's license (Code EC or equivalent for heavy vehicles is highly advantageous).
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities with a proactive approach to operational challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree or National Diploma in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Professional certification in Fleet Management or Transport Management.
  • Experience with specialized agricultural machinery or large commercial truck fleets.
  • A strong existing network within the automotive service, parts, and fuel industries.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations pertaining to fleet operations.
