Job Description

The North West Parks and Tourism Board is seeking an experienced and dedicated Forester to join our dynamic conservation team in Tosca, North West. This pivotal role involves the comprehensive management and conservation of forest and woodland resources within the areas managed or influenced by the Board. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing and implementing sustainable forestry practices, conducting ecological assessments, and ensuring the health and biodiversity of our tree populations. You will be responsible for a range of activities, from reforestation and invasive species control to wildfire management and community liaison, all aimed at fostering healthy and resilient ecosystems. This position offers a unique opportunity to apply your expertise in a challenging and rewarding environment, contributing directly to the provincial conservation mandate. You will work in diverse landscapes, from savanna woodlands to riparian forests, often collaborating with local communities and stakeholders to achieve shared conservation goals. You will also be involved in assessing timber potential where appropriate, ensuring sustainable harvesting and regeneration plans are in place, and advising on land-use planning from a forestry perspective. Furthermore, community engagement will be a key aspect, educating local populations on sustainable resource use, fire awareness, and the benefits of forest conservation. The Forester will also play a critical role in monitoring environmental indicators, identifying threats, and proposing adaptive management strategies to ensure long-term ecosystem health. This hands-on position requires a robust individual ready to face the challenges of the natural environment, promoting both its protection and sustainable utilization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement sustainable forest management plans for various protected areas and communal lands.
  • Conduct regular ecological assessments, forest inventories, and tree health monitoring.
  • Manage and coordinate reforestation, afforestation, and rehabilitation projects using indigenous species.
  • Implement strategies for invasive alien plant control and removal.
  • Develop and execute wildfire prevention, detection, and suppression strategies.
  • Engage with local communities, landowners, and stakeholders on sustainable resource use and conservation practices.
  • Monitor environmental compliance and advise on forestry-related policy and regulations.
  • Prepare detailed reports, maps, and data analyses related to forest resources and activities.
  • Provide expert advice on land-use planning, agroforestry, and ecosystem restoration.
  • Supervise field teams, contractors, and volunteers involved in forestry operations.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in forestry or woodland management.
  • Strong knowledge of South African indigenous trees, ecosystems, and ecological principles.
  • Proficiency in GIS and remote sensing for mapping and data analysis.
  • Experience in wildfire management and prescribed burning techniques.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in remote field conditions.
  • Valid South African driver's license and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field.
  • Registered Professional Forester with a recognized body.
  • Experience with community-based natural resource management initiatives.
  • Proficiency in local languages (e.g., Setswana).
  • Certification in advanced first aid and wilderness survival.
