Job Description

Sasol Limited is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Chemical Engineer to join our dynamic team at our Sasolburg Operations. This critical role offers the opportunity to contribute to the optimisation, design, and safe operation of our world-class chemical processes within a hybrid work model that balances on-site collaboration with remote flexibility. As a Chemical Engineer, you will be instrumental in driving process improvements, ensuring operational efficiency, and championing safety and environmental compliance across our complex manufacturing facilities. You will be responsible for conducting process simulations, performing root cause analyses, and developing innovative solutions to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and improve product quality. This role requires a professional with a deep understanding of chemical engineering principles, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. You will engage with production, maintenance, and research & development departments, providing expert technical support and leading projects from conception through to implementation. Key Responsibilities

  • Optimize existing chemical processes to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality.
  • Design and implement process modifications, including equipment selection and process control strategies.
  • Conduct detailed process simulations, modelling, and data analysis to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for improvement.
  • Lead and participate in HAZOP studies, risk assessments, and other safety reviews to ensure compliance with stringent safety and environmental standards.
  • Provide expert technical support and troubleshooting for operational challenges, collaborating with production and maintenance teams.
  • Develop and manage capital projects related to process enhancements and new facility installations.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and implement corrective actions to maintain optimal plant performance.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering specifications, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Stay abreast of industry best practices, new technologies, and regulatory changes in chemical engineering.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in chemical process design, optimisation, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of process simulation software (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, PRO/II).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical process control.
  • Solid knowledge of safety regulations and environmental compliance in the chemical industry.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Project management experience with a track record of successful execution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field (e.g., Master's or PhD).
  • Professional Engineering registration (ECSA or equivalent international accreditation).
  • Experience with advanced process control systems (e.g., DCS, PLC).
  • Knowledge of green engineering principles and sustainable chemical practices.
  • Experience in a large-scale petrochemical or specialty chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities in project management or team supervision.
