Job Description
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Environmental Warden to join our team, specifically stationed within the iconic Hole in the Wall region of the Eastern Cape. This critical hybrid role involves a blend of on-site fieldwork and community engagement, combined with necessary administrative and planning tasks that can be performed from a local base. As an Environmental Warden, you will be on the front lines of conservation, responsible for safeguarding the unique ecological integrity and natural beauty of this pristine coastal area. Your daily activities will include conducting regular patrols of designated conservation areas, monitoring wildlife and vegetation, preventing and responding to environmental infringements, and actively engaging with local communities and visitors to promote environmental awareness and responsible tourism practices. This position requires an individual who is not only knowledgeable about environmental protection but also possesses strong communication skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the physical stamina to navigate diverse terrains. You will play a vital role in enforcing environmental regulations, documenting observations, and contributing to long-term conservation strategies, all while working in one of South Africa’s most cherished natural landscapes. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular patrols of terrestrial and marine protected areas around Hole in the Wall to monitor environmental conditions, wildlife, and visitor activities.
- Enforce environmental regulations and by-laws, issuing warnings or reporting violations as appropriate.
- Engage with local communities, tourists, and stakeholders to educate them on conservation issues, responsible tourism, and local environmental regulations.
- Monitor flora and fauna, report unusual sightings, and assist with conservation projects such as alien plant removal or habitat restoration.
- Investigate and report incidents of poaching, illegal harvesting, pollution, or other environmental damages.
- Maintain accurate records of patrols, observations, incidents, and community engagement activities.
- Assist in the maintenance of trails, signage, and facilities within the protected area.
- Respond to environmental emergencies and provide basic first aid if necessary.
- Collaborate with other ECPTA staff, local authorities, and conservation partners on joint initiatives.
- Develop and deliver educational presentations or workshops to local schools and community groups.
Required Skills
- Proven knowledge of environmental conservation principles and practices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for community engagement and visitor interaction.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging outdoor environments.
- Excellent observational and reporting skills.
- Physical fitness and ability to undertake strenuous outdoor activities (e.g., long walks, patrols in varying weather conditions).
- Basic computer literacy for record-keeping and reporting.
- Valid South African driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- A diploma or degree in Environmental Science, Conservation, Ecology, or a related field.
- Previous experience as an Environmental Warden, Ranger, or in a similar conservation-focused role.
- Proficiency in local languages, particularly IsiXhosa.
- Knowledge of local biodiversity and ecological systems specific to the Wild Coast.
- First Aid certification.
- Experience with GIS or other mapping tools.
