Job Description
AFGRI Operations Ltd is seeking a highly skilled and passionate Farm Manager with a dedicated focus on livestock to oversee our operations in the picturesque agricultural landscape of Bedford, Eastern Cape. This critical leadership role involves the holistic management of all livestock activities, ensuring the highest standards of animal health, welfare, and productivity are met and exceeded. The successful candidate will be a proactive leader, adept at implementing advanced animal husbandry techniques, optimizing feeding regimes, and executing robust breeding programs. You will be instrumental in managing resources efficiently, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements, and driving the profitability and long-term sustainability of our livestock enterprise. This ‘Hybrid’ role requires a blend of on-site farm management with some administrative or strategic planning work that can be conducted remotely. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all aspects of livestock operations, including breeding, feeding, health, and welfare for designated animal groups.
- Develop, implement, and monitor animal health programs, including vaccination schedules, disease prevention, and parasite control.
- Oversee breeding cycles, manage calving/lambing/farrowing, and maintain detailed records for genetic improvement and herd performance analysis.
- Supervise, train, and mentor farm staff, ensuring effective task delegation, adherence to safety protocols, and fostering a collaborative team environment.
- Manage feed inventories, monitor consumption rates, and ensure the optimal nutritional balance for all livestock based on their developmental stages.
- Maintain meticulous records of livestock inventory, treatments, movements, production data, and financial transactions using relevant software.
- Implement and rigorously enforce biosecurity measures to safeguard animal health and prevent disease outbreaks.
- Ensure the proper maintenance and functionality of all livestock-related infrastructure, including kraals, fencing, watering points, and handling facilities.
- Prepare, manage, and report on operational budgets for the livestock division, optimizing expenditure on feed, veterinary supplies, and labor.
- Ensure strict compliance with all local and national agricultural regulations, animal welfare guidelines, and environmental stewardship policies.
- Generate regular, comprehensive reports on livestock performance, operational challenges, and strategic recommendations to senior management.
- Participate in the planning and execution of strategic initiatives for farm growth, modernization, and sustainability.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in large-scale livestock management (e.g., cattle, sheep, goats, or a combination)
- Comprehensive knowledge of animal husbandry, nutrition, breeding, and preventative health practices
- Strong leadership, team management, and interpersonal communication skills
- Proficiency in farm record-keeping, data analysis, and report generation
- Competency in operating and maintaining essential farm machinery and equipment related to livestock
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and capacity for independent decision-making
- Valid South African driver's license with a clean driving record
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Animal Science, Agriculture, or a closely related field
