Job Description

Are you a highly motivated and community-minded individual with a passion for safety, seeking a meaningful way to contribute from the comfort and convenience of your own home? The George Municipality’s esteemed Fire & Rescue Services are actively seeking dedicated and enthusiastic Remote Support Volunteers to join our vital team, specifically to serve the Uniondale community. While the traditional, hands-on nature of fire and rescue work undeniably demands an on-site physical presence during emergencies, this unique remote volunteer role is strategically designed to focus on critical, behind-the-scenes support functions that are absolutely vital to our overall operational success and community outreach.

In this pivotal remote position, you will be instrumental in enhancing our community engagement, streamlining administrative efficiency, and strengthening our communication channels. Your diverse tasks could encompass developing compelling educational materials for proactive fire prevention campaigns, meticulously managing community safety databases, assisting with the remote coordination of community events, or serving as a crucial link in our communication network during non-emergency periods. This is an incredible and flexible opportunity to leverage your unique skills and talents to support essential emergency services, making a significant difference in keeping Uniondale safe, all while working remotely. We deeply understand and respect the commitment involved in volunteering and are pleased to offer a flexible schedule that can be tailored to accommodate your personal availability and commitments. This allows you to make a profound and lasting impact on community safety without needing to be physically present at the scene of an incident. No prior direct experience in fire services is required; rather, we are specifically looking for individuals who demonstrate a strong work ethic, exceptional reliability, and a genuine, heartfelt desire to serve and protect their community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development, design, and dissemination of informative fire prevention and general safety awareness materials tailored for the Uniondale community.
  • Provide essential administrative support to the Fire & Rescue team, including meticulous data entry, record-keeping, and document management, all performed remotely.
  • Help manage and update digital communication channels, such as social media platforms or community bulletin boards, to share critical safety information and updates.
  • Conduct research on current best practices for community safety programs, volunteer management strategies, or emergency preparedness initiatives.
  • Actively participate in remote training sessions and virtual team meetings to stay informed, engaged, and connected with the broader Fire & Rescue team.
  • Potentially assist with the remote coordination and logistical planning for non-emergency community engagement events or fundraising efforts designed to support the service.

Required Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to convey information clearly and effectively.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), email platforms, and internet browsing.
  • Strong organizational skills and an acute attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in all tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as an integral part of a remote team.
  • Exceptional reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of personal responsibility.
  • Consistent access to a stable and reliable internet connection and a suitable, quiet remote workspace.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer experience, particularly within community service, public safety, or non-profit organizations.
  • Familiarity with the Uniondale area and its unique community dynamics, including local challenges and resources.
  • Experience with graphic design software or content creation tools for developing engaging public information materials.
  • Basic understanding of emergency services operations or fundamental public safety principles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Afrikaans or Xhosa in addition to English, which would be highly advantageous for local community engagement.

Perks & Benefits

  • Opportunity to make a tangible and significant difference in community safety and overall well-being, all from a remote setting.
  • Gain invaluable experience in emergency services support, public safety initiatives, and remote team collaboration.
  • Enjoy highly flexible volunteer hours that can be adapted to comfortably fit your existing schedule and lifestyle.
  • Access to opportunities for continuous remote training and valuable skill development.
  • Become an integral part of a dedicated and passionate team deeply committed to serving and protecting the Uniondale community.
  • Receive an official Certificate of Appreciation acknowledging your invaluable contribution to the community.
