Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Boat Skipper to join our team in a unique remote capacity. While our vessels grace the beautiful waters of Gordons Bay and False Bay, this critical role will primarily operate from a remote location, leveraging cutting-edge technology to ensure the seamless execution of our marine operations, uphold the highest safety standards, and provide exceptional support to our on-site crew and clients. This is not a traditional on-the-water skippering role, but rather a strategic position for a seasoned maritime professional who can remotely monitor, manage, and optimize our fleet’s activities. You will be instrumental in developing and implementing digital operational plans, overseeing remote compliance, coordinating logistics, and serving as a critical point of contact for all marine-related inquiries and emergencies. The ideal candidate will possess deep maritime knowledge, exceptional communication skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving in a remote setting. This role demands a strong understanding of vessel management systems, weather analytics, and digital communication tools to ensure our adventures are always safe, efficient, and memorable.
Key Responsibilities
- Remotely monitor vessel movements, status, and environmental conditions using advanced marine telemetry and weather forecasting systems.
- Develop, optimize, and communicate detailed digital voyage plans and itineraries to on-site skippers and crew.
- Ensure strict compliance with all South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) regulations and international maritime laws through remote audits and documentation management.
- Provide expert guidance and support to on-site skippers regarding navigation, safety protocols, and operational procedures.
- Act as the primary remote contact for emergency response coordination, providing critical decision-making support and liaising with relevant authorities if required.
- Manage and maintain digital vessel logs, maintenance schedules, and safety checklists.
- Facilitate seamless communication between on-site crew, clients (when necessary), and company management.
- Assist in the remote training and continuous professional development of on-site marine personnel.
- Oversee fuel consumption, provisioning, and resource management through remote data analysis.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of remote operational strategies and safety management systems.
Required Skills
- Valid SAMSA Skipper's Ticket (minimum Class 4; Class 3 or higher preferred).
- Minimum 4 years of proven experience as a Boat Skipper or in a related marine operational role.
- Proficiency in maritime navigation, safety management, and emergency procedures.
- Strong command of marine communication protocols and equipment (VHF, satellite communication).
- Demonstrable experience with marine telemetry, vessel monitoring software, and digital charting systems.
- Exceptional remote communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.
- High level of organizational skills and attention to detail for documentation and compliance.
- Ability to make critical decisions under pressure in a remote operational environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced SAMSA qualifications (e.g., Coastal Skipper, Ocean Yachtmaster).
- Formal training in marine safety management or risk assessment.
- Experience with marine tourism or passenger vessel operations.
