Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Olive Grove Manager to strategically oversee the remote management and operational excellence of our olive groves. While this is a remote-first leadership position, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the optimal health, productivity, and quality of our olive crops through a blend of advanced remote monitoring, data-driven decision-making, and critical on-site strategic visits. This role requires a professional who can effectively manage all aspects of olive cultivation, from orchard planning and irrigation management to pest control, harvesting logistics, and quality assurance, leveraging technology and remote team coordination. You will be instrumental in developing and implementing best practices for sustainable olive farming, optimizing yields, and maintaining the superior quality for which Darling Olives is known. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of horticultural science, agricultural economics, and the ability to lead and coordinate teams effectively from a distance, ensuring alignment with our company’s goals and values. You will be expected to conduct regular, planned visits to the olive groves in Darling, Western Cape, to conduct physical inspections, provide hands-on guidance, and ensure operational standards are met, but your day-to-day strategic planning, data analysis, and team coordination will be managed remotely. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategic plans for olive grove management, including planting, pruning, irrigation, fertilization, and pest/disease management, with remote oversight.
- Monitor olive grove health and productivity using remote sensing technologies, drone imagery, and data analytics to identify issues and optimize interventions.
- Coordinate and manage harvest operations remotely, ensuring efficiency, quality, and timely processing through communication with on-site teams and contractors.
- Oversee the procurement of agricultural supplies, equipment, and services, negotiating with suppliers for cost-effectiveness and quality.
- Develop and manage budgets for olive grove operations, analyzing financial performance and implementing cost-saving measures.
- Ensure compliance with all agricultural regulations, environmental standards, and food safety protocols, particularly related to organic or sustainable certifications.
- Recruit, train, and manage on-site grove teams and contractors, providing leadership and guidance through virtual and periodic in-person meetings.
- Implement and maintain robust quality control procedures for all stages of olive cultivation and harvesting.
- Conduct regular market research to stay abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in olive farming.
- Prepare comprehensive reports on grove performance, production forecasts, and operational efficiency for senior management.
- Manage and maintain grove infrastructure, including irrigation systems, roads, and equipment, coordinating repairs and upgrades remotely.
- Champion sustainable farming practices and promote environmental stewardship within the olive groves.
