Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Workshop Manager to lead our dynamic workshop operations in Carolusberg. This critical role is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and optimal performance of a diverse fleet of heavy-duty mining vehicles, light vehicles, and various pieces of fixed and mobile machinery. The successful candidate will drive efficiency, ensure adherence to safety standards, and manage a team of dedicated technicians. This position offers a unique hybrid work model, allowing for a strategic balance between hands-on workshop presence and remote administrative planning and reporting. You will be instrumental in developing and implementing preventative maintenance programs, managing spare parts inventory, and optimising workshop processes to minimise downtime and maximise asset availability. Your leadership will be crucial in fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and technical excellence within the workshop team. We are looking for a proactive problem-solver with a strong technical background in heavy equipment, excellent organisational skills, and a proven ability to manage complex operations in a demanding industrial environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee all daily workshop operations, including maintenance, repairs, and servicing of heavy mining vehicles, light vehicles, and machinery.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor preventative maintenance schedules to ensure optimal equipment performance and availability.
  • Lead, mentor, and motivate a team of technicians, fostering a safe and productive work environment.
  • Manage spare parts inventory, procurement, and ensure efficient stock control to avoid operational delays.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all company safety policies, procedures, and relevant legislative requirements.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits to maintain high standards of workmanship and equipment reliability.
  • Prepare and manage the workshop budget, controlling costs and optimising resource allocation.
  • Implement and utilise a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for tracking maintenance activities and generating reports.
  • Liaise with operational departments to understand equipment needs and prioritise maintenance activities.
  • Analyse equipment performance data and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Oversee the training and development of workshop personnel.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and services performed.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Workshop Manager or similar leadership role in heavy plant or mining environment.
  • Strong technical expertise in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and heavy-duty machinery.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team and foster a positive work culture.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills, with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Strong understanding of health and safety regulations in a workshop setting.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to challenges.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant Trade Certificate (e.g., Diesel Mechanic, Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic).
  • National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with specific mining equipment brands (e.g., Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo).
  • Knowledge of ISO standards related to quality and environmental management.
  • Project management experience.
