Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Remote Electrical Technician with a specialisation in Renewable Energy to join our growing team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to critical green energy projects from the comfort of your home base in Soebatsfontein, Northern Cape. As a Remote Electrical Technician, you will play a pivotal role in the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and commissioning support of various renewable energy systems, primarily solar PV installations, and potentially wind energy components across our project sites in the Northern Cape and broader South Africa. You will work closely with our engineering and project management teams, providing remote technical support, diagnostics, and on-site guidance when necessary. This position requires a proactive individual with strong technical acumen, exceptional problem-solving abilities, and the discipline to manage tasks independently in a remote work environment. Your expertise will ensure the optimal performance, reliability, and safety of our renewable energy assets, contributing directly to our commitment to sustainable power generation. You will be instrumental in upholding our high standards of quality and operational efficiency, making a tangible difference in the energy sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide remote technical support, diagnostics, and troubleshooting for renewable energy systems, including solar PV arrays, inverters, battery storage, and associated electrical infrastructure.
  • Assist with the remote monitoring of system performance, identify anomalies, and recommend corrective actions to maximise energy generation.
  • Interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and technical manuals for installation, maintenance, and fault-finding purposes.
  • Guide and coordinate with on-site teams or local contractors for routine maintenance, repairs, and preventative checks.
  • Conduct virtual site inspections and assist in commissioning activities for new installations, ensuring adherence to design specifications and safety standards.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, documentation, and maintenance logs.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant electrical codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
  • Participate in virtual training sessions and continuous professional development to stay abreast of new technologies and industry best practices.
  • Manage and prioritise workload effectively, demonstrating strong self-management and organisational skills in a remote setting.

Required Skills

  • National Diploma or N6 in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of 3 years of proven experience as an Electrical Technician, with significant exposure to renewable energy systems (e.g., solar PV, wind).
  • Strong understanding of AC/DC electrical principles, power electronics, and control systems.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical diagrams.
  • Demonstrable experience with fault finding, diagnostics, and repair of electrical equipment and renewable energy components (inverters, optimisers, cabling).
  • Familiarity with various solar PV system architectures (grid-tied, off-grid, hybrid) and associated technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective remote collaboration.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a methodical approach to technical challenges.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote work environment.
  • Valid driver's license (for potential occasional site visits, if required).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal) as an Electrician.
  • PV GreenCard qualification.
  • Experience with SCADA systems and remote monitoring platforms for renewable energy assets.
  • Knowledge of battery energy storage systems (BESS).
  • Familiarity with South African electrical regulations and renewable energy standards.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and software for electrical and PV systems.
