Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Welder to join our dynamic team at Kakamas Engineering Works. This is a unique opportunity for a dedicated professional to engage in a ‘Hybrid’ work model, blending crucial workshop-based fabrication with essential on-site installation, repair, and maintenance tasks across the Northern Cape region. As a Welder, you will be instrumental in the creation, modification, and repair of various metallic structures and components, ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality. Your work will span across diverse projects, from custom agricultural equipment and mining infrastructure to general structural steelwork and critical repair jobs.
The ‘Hybrid’ aspect of this role means that while your primary base will be our well-equipped workshop in Kakamas, you will also be required to travel to client sites for specific projects. This could involve anything from urgent repairs on a farm to assisting with a new installation at a mining operation, or conducting inspections and assessments. This blend offers a stimulating variety of work environments and challenges, moving beyond a single fixed location. Key Responsibilities
- Perform various welding techniques including MIG, TIG, Arc (SMAW), and Flux-cored (FCAW) on different materials such as mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
- Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications to determine layout and sequences of operations.
- Fabricate, assemble, and repair metal structures and products, including agricultural implements, mining components, and general construction elements.
- Operate and maintain welding equipment, grinders, plasma cutters, and other fabrication tools safely and efficiently.
- Inspect finished products and structures for quality, accuracy, and adherence to design specifications.
- Adhere strictly to all company and industry safety regulations and standards, including proper use of PPE.
- Collaborate effectively with engineers, fabricators, and other team members to ensure project completion on schedule.
- Conduct on-site welding and repairs at client locations within the Northern Cape as required, including travel and setup.
- Assist in material preparation, cutting, and grinding as needed for welding projects.
- Troubleshoot welding issues and provide innovative solutions to fabrication challenges.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in MIG, TIG, and Arc welding processes.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and welding symbols accurately.
- Strong understanding of metal properties and appropriate welding procedures for various materials.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and quality control.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license for travel to client sites.
- Physical fitness to perform duties including lifting heavy materials and working in various positions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant trade qualification or certification (e.g., NQF Level 3 or higher in Welding/Fabrication).
- Experience with advanced welding techniques or specialized materials.
- Prior experience in agricultural or mining equipment fabrication and repair.
- Experience operating forklifts or overhead cranes.
- First Aid and basic fire fighting certification.
