We are seeking a passionate and highly skilled Horticulturist to join our dynamic team in Aliwal North, Eastern Cape. This hybrid role offers the best of both worlds, blending on-site engagement with farmers, field visits, and nursery management with the flexibility of office-based planning, research, and client consultation. The successful candidate will be instrumental in providing expert horticultural advice, developing sustainable plant care strategies, and supporting our clients across a diverse range of agricultural and landscaping projects. You will work closely with our agricultural sales and technical teams to identify client needs, recommend appropriate solutions, and implement best practices in plant health, soil management, pest control, and cultivation techniques. Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert horticultural advice and technical support to farmers, clients, and internal teams, both on-site and remotely.
- Conduct on-site inspections and assessments of crops, orchards, gardens, and nurseries to diagnose plant health issues and recommend appropriate interventions.
- Develop and implement sustainable plant care plans, including integrated pest and disease management, precise fertilization, and efficient irrigation strategies.
- Advise on optimal plant selection, propagation, and cultivation techniques specifically suited for the Aliwal North climate and diverse soil conditions.
- Assist clients with landscape design and maintenance plans for both commercial and residential properties, ensuring aesthetic and ecological balance.
- Stay abreast of the latest horticultural research, innovative technologies, and industry best practices, integrating new knowledge into client solutions.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, detailed recommendations, and engaging educational materials for clients and colleagues.
- Collaborate effectively with sales and marketing teams to promote horticultural products and services, expanding our reach and impact.
- Manage and maintain internal nursery stock, ensuring optimal health, quality, and genetic integrity of plants.
- Conduct engaging workshops or training sessions for clients on various horticultural topics, fostering knowledge transfer and skill development.
- Ensure strict compliance with environmental regulations and actively promote eco-friendly, sustainable agricultural practices.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany, Agronomy, or a closely related scientific field.
- Minimum of 3 years of practical experience as a Horticulturist or in a similar professional role.
- In-depth knowledge of plant pathology, entomology, soil science, and plant nutrition principles.
- Proven ability to accurately diagnose and recommend effective treatments for various plant diseases, pests, and deficiencies.
- Strong understanding of modern irrigation systems and efficient water management techniques in horticultural settings.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and presentations.
- Valid South African driver's license and a willingness to travel locally for frequent site visits.
- Fluency in English and Afrikaans is highly advantageous due to local demographics and client base.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-graduate qualification (Honours, Master's, or PhD) in Horticulture or a specialized agricultural field.
- Experience with precision agriculture technologies, remote sensing, and data analysis in horticultural contexts.
- Membership in a relevant professional horticultural or agricultural association (e.g., SAGIC, SAAGA).
- Knowledge of local indigenous flora, fynbos, and conservation practices within the Eastern Cape.
- Demonstrated experience in a client-facing advisory role.
