Job Description

Transnet Freight Rail is seeking a dedicated and experienced Remote Truck Driver to join our dynamic logistics team based in the Queenstown, Eastern Cape region. This unique role emphasizes efficiency, independence, and strong communication skills, as the successful candidate will primarily manage their daily operations and reporting remotely, while executing crucial freight transport tasks within the designated regional network. While the nature of truck driving is inherently on-the-road, this ‘Remote’ designation means you will not be required to report to a central depot daily for dispatch or administrative duties. Instead, you will receive assignments, manage your logbooks, complete pre/post-trip inspections, and communicate with dispatch and management digitally and remotely from your base in Queenstown. You will be responsible for the safe and timely transportation of goods, adhering strictly to all road safety regulations, company policies, and maintaining the highest standards of vehicle integrity. This position is perfect for a self-motivated individual who is proficient with modern communication tools, possesses excellent navigation skills, and is committed to delivering freight reliably across the Eastern Cape. If you thrive in an autonomous environment and are passionate about contributing to South Africa’s vital logistics infrastructure, we encourage you to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate heavy-duty trucks to transport goods across designated routes within the Eastern Cape region.
  • Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, reporting any defects remotely via digital platforms.
  • Ensure timely delivery and collection of freight, adhering to scheduled timelines and routes.
  • Maintain accurate digital logbooks, manifest documents, and all necessary paperwork.
  • Communicate effectively and proactively with dispatch, clients, and management using mobile and digital communication tools.
  • Adhere strictly to all national and company road safety regulations, traffic laws, and transport guidelines.
  • Secure cargo properly to prevent damage during transit and ensure compliance with load distribution laws.
  • Represent Transnet Freight Rail professionally at all times, maintaining high standards of customer service.
  • Manage fuel consumption efficiently and track mileage accurately.
  • Assist with loading and unloading freight when necessary, ensuring proper handling of goods.
  • Report any incidents, accidents, or delays immediately to remote dispatch.

Required Skills

  • Valid EC/Code 14 driver's license with a Public Driver's Permit (PDP)
  • Minimum of 3 years of verifiable heavy-duty truck driving experience
  • Clean driving record with no major violations
  • Proficiency in using GPS navigation systems and digital communication tools (e.g., smartphone apps for logging and reporting)
  • Strong understanding of road safety regulations and vehicle maintenance basics
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage routes efficiently
  • Good physical condition to handle demanding driving schedules and occasional manual tasks
  • Reliable and responsible with a strong work ethic

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced or defensive driving certification
  • Experience with various types of trailers (e.g., flatbeds, tautliners, tankers)
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for minor vehicle troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with the Eastern Cape road network and logistics hubs
  • Experience with electronic logging devices (ELDs)

Perks & Benefits

  • Competitive salary package
  • Comprehensive medical aid benefits
  • Pension fund contributions
  • Paid time off and annual leave
  • Ongoing professional development and training opportunities
  • Access to a supportive and safety-conscious work environment
  • Opportunity to contribute to a national economic powerhouse
