Job Description
Utexrwa is seeking a dynamic and highly creative Textile & Apparel Designer to join our innovative team in Kigali. This is an exceptional opportunity for a talented individual passionate about transforming raw materials into stunning, wearable art. As our Textile & Apparel Designer, you will be instrumental in conceptualizing, developing, and executing design collections that reflect both global fashion trends and the rich cultural heritage of Rwanda. You will work across various stages of the design process, from initial mood boards and fabric selection to pattern development and sample approval, ensuring our products meet the highest standards of aesthetics and quality. This role requires a keen eye for detail, a strong understanding of textile properties, and the ability to translate design concepts into commercially viable apparel. You will collaborate closely with our production teams, marketing department, and external partners, playing a pivotal role in shaping Utexrwa’s future collections and enhancing our brand’s presence in the market. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth trend research and analysis, identifying emerging fashion and textile trends, colors, and patterns relevant to Utexrwa's target markets.
- Develop innovative design concepts for new textile prints, fabric patterns, and apparel collections, ensuring alignment with brand aesthetics and business objectives.
- Create detailed technical sketches, CAD drawings, and specifications for garments and textile designs using industry-standard software.
- Select and source appropriate fabrics, trims, and embellishments, considering cost-effectiveness, quality, and sustainability.
- Collaborate closely with pattern makers, sample machinists, and production teams to ensure design integrity and feasibility from concept to final product.
- Oversee the sampling process, providing constructive feedback and approving prototypes to ensure design accuracy and fit.
- Prepare comprehensive design presentations for internal stakeholders and external buyers.
- Maintain an organized design archive, including specifications, samples, and fabric swatches.
- Ensure all designs comply with industry standards and quality control parameters.
- Contribute to the brand's creative direction and actively participate in brainstorming sessions for seasonal collections.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in design software, including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
- Strong hand-sketching and illustration abilities.
- Comprehensive knowledge of textile materials, dyeing techniques, printing processes, and garment construction.
- An exceptional portfolio showcasing original design work and technical skills.
- Excellent color theory, textile pattern development, and apparel design principles.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, Textile Arts, or a related field.
- Experience with sustainable design practices and eco-friendly material sourcing.
- Familiarity with African textile designs and fashion trends.
- Experience working with manufacturing processes and factories.
- Ability to communicate in Kinyarwanda or French.
