Job Description

We are seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Mine Safety Officer to join our dynamic team at the Ngezi Operations. This pivotal role is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive health and safety programs to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel within our underground and surface mining operations. The successful candidate will be a proactive champion for safety, meticulously identifying potential hazards, assessing risks, and enforcing strict adherence to both national and international safety regulations, as well as Zimplats’ stringent internal safety policies.

Your day-to-day will involve conducting thorough safety inspections, performing detailed incident investigations to determine root causes, and recommending corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence. You will be instrumental in developing and delivering engaging safety training programs, fostering a strong safety-conscious culture among employees at all levels. Furthermore, you will manage safety documentation, prepare comprehensive reports on safety performance, and advise management on best practices and compliance requirements. This role demands a hands-on approach, strong leadership skills, and an unwavering commitment to maintaining a ‘safety first’ mindset in a demanding mining environment. You will work closely with operational teams, supervisors, and external regulatory bodies, ensuring that Zimplats remains at the forefront of mining safety excellence. This position requires an individual with excellent analytical abilities to interpret data and trends, strong problem-solving skills to address complex safety challenges, and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups, from senior management to front-line workers. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor robust health and safety management systems.
  • Conduct regular and thorough safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across all mining operations (underground and surface).
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, identifying root causes and recommending effective corrective and preventative actions.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all relevant Zimbabwean mining safety legislation (e.g., Mines and Minerals Act) and international safety standards.
  • Design and deliver effective safety training programs for new hires and existing employees, covering various safety topics and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, and corrective actions.
  • Prepare and present detailed safety performance reports to management, highlighting trends and areas for improvement.
  • Advise management and employees on safety best practices, potential hazards, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through awareness campaigns, safety meetings, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and other stakeholders on safety-related matters.
  • Manage and oversee the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 5 years) in a Mine Safety Officer or similar role within a large-scale mining environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Zimbabwean mining safety legislation and regulations.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation techniques and root cause analysis.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for documentation and reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Mining Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional safety certifications (e.g., NEBOSH International General Certificate, SAMTRAC, OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001 Lead Auditor).
  • Experience with Platinum Group Metals (PGM) mining operations (platinum, palladium, etc.).
  • First Aid and advanced emergency response certifications.
  • Knowledge of health and hygiene management in mining.
