Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Port Operations Specialist to join our dynamic team in Durban. This critical role is at the heart of our port’s efficiency, ensuring the seamless coordination and execution of all operational activities. The Port Operations Specialist will be responsible for overseeing vessel movements, cargo handling, berth management, and resource allocation to maximize operational performance and uphold stringent safety standards. Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and monitor all vessel movements, including arrivals, departures, and berthing, ensuring adherence to schedules and safety protocols.
- Manage cargo handling operations, optimizing equipment and personnel deployment for efficient loading, unloading, and storage.
- Implement and enforce port safety regulations, environmental compliance, and security procedures in accordance with national and international standards.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders, including shipping lines, customs officials, port authorities, and terminal operators, to facilitate seamless operations.
- Analyze operational data to identify bottlenecks, propose improvements, and implement solutions to enhance productivity and reduce turnaround times.
- Prepare and maintain detailed operational reports, logs, and documentation for record-keeping and regulatory compliance.
- Respond effectively to operational incidents, emergencies, or disruptions, coordinating response efforts and minimizing impact.
- Provide guidance and support to junior operational staff, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in port operations, maritime logistics, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of port systems, vessel operations, cargo handling, and terminal management.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to make critical decisions under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency in operational planning software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Sound knowledge of maritime safety regulations (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL, ISPS Code).
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel within the port area.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline.
