Are you a seasoned coffee professional with a discerning palate and an unwavering commitment to quality? Rwanda Bean Company is seeking an experienced and passionate Coffee Quality Grader to join our dedicated team in Kigali. In this pivotal role, you will be the guardian of our coffee’s excellence, ensuring every bean that leaves our facility meets the highest international and company-specific standards. The Coffee Quality Grader will be responsible for meticulously evaluating green and roasted coffee samples, identifying defects, conducting sensory analysis (cupping), and ensuring compliance with all quality control protocols. Your expertise will guide processing decisions, inform farmer feedback, and secure the consistency that our global customers have come to expect. You will navigate the complexities of coffee from cherry to cup, understanding how various factors influence the final product. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct daily quality control assessments of green coffee samples (incoming, parchment, dry milling, export pre-shipment) using physical grading methods.
- Perform sensory analysis (cupping) of green coffee samples according to SCAA/CQI protocols, providing detailed feedback on aroma, flavor, acidity, body, and defects.
- Monitor moisture content, screen size, and other physical attributes of coffee batches.
- Identify and document coffee defects, categorizing them according to industry standards.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all quality control assessments, cupping scores, and inventory quality status.
- Collaborate with the production and processing teams to identify and address quality issues proactively.
- Provide constructive feedback to farmer liaison teams regarding coffee quality improvements at the farm and washing station levels.
- Ensure all coffee meets buyer specifications and international quality standards before shipment.
- Assist in the development and implementation of quality assurance protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Participate in calibration cupping sessions with internal and external partners.
- Contribute to training initiatives for staff and farmers on best practices for coffee quality.
Required Skills
- Q Grader certification (or R Grader equivalent)
- Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in coffee quality control or grading
- Proven expertise in sensory evaluation (cupping) and defect identification
- Strong understanding of green coffee physical grading standards
- Familiarity with coffee processing methods (washed, natural, honey)
- Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
- Proficiency in record-keeping and data management
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Agronomy, Agriculture, or a related field
- Experience working with Rwandan coffee or African specialty coffees
- Proficiency in Kinyarwanda (beneficial but not mandatory)
- Knowledge of international coffee trade regulations and certifications (e.g., Fair Trade, Organic)
- Experience with quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001)
