Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Winemaker to join our esteemed team at Spier Wine Farm. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the legacy of one of South Africa’s most iconic wineries. The successful candidate will be instrumental in overseeing the entire winemaking process, from grape selection in the vineyard through to the final bottling, ensuring the consistent quality, style, and distinctive character that Spier wines are renowned for. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, creative flair, and strong leadership skills. You will work closely with our viticultural team to monitor grape development, make critical harvest decisions, and implement innovative cellar practices. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee all aspects of the winemaking process from harvest to bottling, ensuring quality and adherence to Spier's style guidelines.
  • Collaborate closely with the viticultural team on vineyard management decisions, grape quality assessment, and harvest scheduling.
  • Lead and mentor cellar staff, fostering a culture of excellence, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Implement and manage fermentation, maturation, blending, and stabilisation processes.
  • Conduct regular sensory evaluation of wines at various stages of production.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all winemaking activities and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Manage cellar operations, including equipment maintenance, inventory control, and sanitation.
  • Participate in wine tastings, promotional events, and engage with local and international trade.
  • Develop and implement new winemaking techniques and innovations to enhance wine quality and character.
  • Monitor market trends and consumer preferences to inform winemaking decisions and product development.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Oenology or Viticulture from a recognised institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of practical experience as a Winemaker, preferably in a premium wine region.
  • In-depth knowledge of viticulture and winemaking techniques, including fermentation management and blending.
  • Proven leadership and team management abilities.
  • Strong sensory evaluation skills and a keen palate.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Proficiency in cellar management software and general computer skills.
  • Valid driver's license and own reliable transport.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Oenology or a related field.
  • International winemaking experience.
  • Experience with organic or biodynamic winemaking practices.
  • Knowledge of sustainability initiatives within the wine industry.
  • Fluency in Afrikaans would be advantageous.
