Primate Safaris is seeking a highly skilled and passionate Tour Guide specializing in Gorilla Trekking to join our dynamic team. This pivotal role involves leading small groups of international tourists through the challenging yet rewarding terrains of Rwanda’s national parks, primarily Volcanoes National Park, to witness the incredible mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
As a Gorilla Trekking Tour Guide, you will be the face of Primate Safaris, embodying our commitment to excellence, conservation, and unforgettable experiences. Beyond navigation and logistics, your role is to educate, inspire, and engage our guests, providing rich insights into primate behavior, the delicate ecosystem, and the conservation challenges and successes. You will manage all aspects of the trekking experience, from pre-trek briefings to post-trek debriefings, ensuring a seamless, safe, and profoundly moving adventure for every participant. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and guide international tourists on gorilla trekking expeditions in Volcanoes National Park and other designated areas.
- Provide comprehensive pre-trek briefings and post-trek debriefings, covering safety protocols, trekking etiquette, and wildlife information.
- Educate guests on the history, behavior, and conservation status of mountain gorillas, as well as the local flora and fauna.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all guests throughout the trek, including navigating challenging terrains and managing emergency situations.
- Maintain clear and respectful communication with park rangers, trackers, porters, and local communities.
- Manage logistics for trekking groups, including permits, equipment checks, and coordination with transport.
- Act as a cultural ambassador, offering insights into Rwandan culture and promoting responsible tourism practices.
- Handle unexpected situations with professionalism and calm, ensuring a positive guest experience.
- Complete necessary administrative tasks, including trek reports and feedback collection.
Required Skills
- Fluent in English (written and spoken); proficiency in Kinyarwanda is a strong asset.
- Extensive knowledge of Rwanda's wildlife, especially primates, and national parks.
- Proven experience in leading treks or tours in challenging natural environments.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and storytelling skills.
- Strong navigation and wilderness survival skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical fitness and stamina for strenuous trekking.
- Valid driving license (Category B or higher) with experience driving 4×4 vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Tourism, Hospitality, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Certification in Wilderness First Aid or advanced first aid.
- Proficiency in additional international languages (e.g., French, German, Spanish).
- Previous experience working with high-end international clientele.
- Demonstrable commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism practices.
- Deep understanding of local customs and cultural sensitivity.
