Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Mining Engineer with specialized expertise in bauxite operations to join our dynamic team in Discovery Bay, St. Ann. The Mining Engineer (Bauxite) will play a pivotal role in the planning, design, and execution of our bauxite mining activities. This position requires a professional who can blend technical proficiency with strategic thinking to optimize production, ensure operational efficiency, and uphold the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance. You will be instrumental in developing short-term and long-term mine plans, designing pit expansions, managing equipment utilization, and implementing best practices in an open-pit mining environment. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, review, and implement short-term and long-term mine plans for bauxite extraction, optimizing production schedules and resource recovery.
- Design and manage open-pit development, haul road networks, waste dumps, and other mine infrastructure.
- Monitor and evaluate mining operations, identifying areas for improvement in efficiency, productivity, and cost control.
- Conduct comprehensive geological and geotechnical analyses to ensure pit stability and safe mining practices.
- Ensure strict compliance with all local and international mining regulations, environmental standards, and company policies.
- Oversee mine rehabilitation and environmental restoration projects, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements and community commitments.
- Utilize advanced mining software (e.g., Surpac, Vulcan, MineSight) for mine design, scheduling, and volumetric calculations.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, production forecasts, budget analyses, and progress updates for senior management.
- Supervise and mentor junior engineers, technical staff, and contractors, promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
- Lead and participate in health, safety, and environmental (HSE) initiatives, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
- Collaborate effectively with operations, maintenance, geology, and environmental teams to achieve integrated operational goals.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 36 months (3 years) post-qualification experience in open-pit mining operations, with a strong preference for bauxite mining.
- Demonstrated proficiency in industry-standard mining software (e.g., Surpac, Vulcan, MineSight).
- Strong understanding of geological principles, geotechnical engineering, and mine design methodologies.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
- In-depth knowledge of Jamaican mining regulations, environmental protection acts, and occupational health and safety standards.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage projects, supervise teams, and communicate effectively across all levels.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a challenging industrial environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Mining Engineering or a related specialized field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent professional certification.
- Experience with continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma.
- Project management certification (e.g., PMP).
- Familiarity with drone technology and photogrammetry for mine surveying and mapping.
