Seed Co Limited is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Irrigation Technician to join our dynamic agricultural operations team based in Harare, Zimbabwe. This pivotal role will be responsible for the efficient installation, maintenance, repair, and optimization of all irrigation systems across our research and production sites. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical aptitude, practical experience with various irrigation technologies (drip, sprinkler, pivot systems), and a deep understanding of water management principles in an agricultural context. You will play a crucial role in ensuring our crops receive optimal water supply, directly contributing to the success of our breeding programs and seed production yields. This position demands a proactive individual who can troubleshoot complex issues, perform routine preventative maintenance, and collaborate effectively with farm managers and agronomists to implement water-saving strategies. Key Responsibilities
- Install, inspect, maintain, and repair various types of irrigation systems, including drip, sprinkler, and center pivot systems.
- Perform regular preventative maintenance on irrigation equipment, pumps, valves, and control systems to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot complex electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic problems within irrigation systems.
- Operate and program irrigation controllers, managing water schedules and ensuring appropriate water distribution for different crop types and growth stages.
- Monitor water usage and system efficiency, recommending and implementing improvements for water conservation and operational cost reduction.
- Maintain accurate records of system installations, repairs, maintenance activities, and inventory of spare parts.
- Collaborate with farm management, agronomists, and research teams to understand irrigation requirements and adapt systems accordingly.
- Train and supervise junior staff or temporary workers on basic irrigation maintenance and operation procedures.
- Adhere strictly to safety protocols and environmental regulations during all operations.
- Assist in the procurement of irrigation components and manage stock levels.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as an Irrigation Technician in an agricultural or large-scale landscaping setting.
- Strong knowledge of hydraulic principles, plumbing, and electrical systems related to irrigation.
- Proficiency in installing, programming, and troubleshooting irrigation controllers and sensors.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and design specifications.
- Familiarity with various irrigation equipment brands and technologies.
- Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate relevant machinery.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or certification in Irrigation Technology, Agriculture, or a related field.
- Experience with advanced irrigation monitoring and automation systems.
- Knowledge of local agricultural practices and climate conditions in Zimbabwe.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Certification in welding or pipefitting is a plus.
