Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Health and Safety Officer to join our dynamic team at our Rustenburg operations. This critical role involves ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all personnel, contractors, and visitors within our demanding mining environment. As a Health and Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring robust safety management systems that comply with national legislation, company policies, and international best practices. Your expertise will be vital in identifying potential hazards, conducting thorough risk assessments, and recommending effective control measures to mitigate risks across all operational areas, from underground workings to surface infrastructure. You will lead by example, promoting a proactive safety culture where every individual understands their role in preventing incidents and fostering a safe working environment. This position demands a strong understanding of mining operations, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to communicate complex safety information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, from management to front-line employees. You will be responsible for meticulously investigating incidents, analyzing trends, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance our safety performance and drive us towards our ‘zero harm’ vision. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety policies and procedures in line with OHS Act and Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) requirements.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near misses, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Deliver comprehensive safety training and induction programs to employees and contractors.
  • Prepare and submit accurate safety reports, statistics, and analyses to management.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of safety controls and initiatives.
  • Advise management on health and safety matters and legislative compliance.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of safety equipment.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through awareness campaigns and proactive engagement.
  • Participate in emergency response planning and drills.

Required Skills

  • National Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent (e.g., SAMTRAC/NOSA Certificate)
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience as a Health and Safety Officer in the mining industry.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and other relevant OHS legislation.
  • Proven experience in conducting risk assessments and incident investigations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Registration with relevant professional bodies (e.g., SAIOSH).
  • Experience with ISO 45001 or other integrated management systems.
  • Blasting Certificate or other mining-specific certifications.
  • First Aid and Fire Fighting certifications.
