Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Forestry Technician to join our dynamic team in Manica Province. The successful candidate will play a crucial, hands-on role in the management and maintenance of our forest plantations, ensuring sustainable growth, optimal health, and maximum productivity of our forestry assets. This position involves extensive fieldwork, meticulous data collection, and strict adherence to industry best practices in silviculture and forest protection. You will work closely with our forest engineers and collaborate with local communities, directly contributing to our mission of responsible and productive forest management. Key Responsibilities
- Implement and supervise all silvicultural operations including planting, weeding, pruning, and thinning schedules.
- Conduct regular forest health monitoring, proactively identify pests and diseases, and assist in implementing effective control measures.
- Perform comprehensive forest inventory and accurate data collection using GPS and other relevant technological tools.
- Assist in the strategic planning and efficient execution of fire prevention and control strategies.
- Supervise, train, and mentor field teams, ensuring strict adherence to all safety protocols and operational standards.
- Monitor environmental conditions within plantations and ensure full compliance with all local and national environmental regulations.
- Participate actively in mapping and surveying activities essential for new plantation establishment and ongoing maintenance.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all field activities and contribute to regular operational reporting.
- Collaborate effectively with local communities on forestry-related initiatives and facilitate resolution of minor land-use disputes.
- Operate and maintain specialized forestry equipment and machinery safely and efficiently.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 2 years) in forestry operations, conservation, or a closely related field.
- Solid knowledge of silviculture, forest inventory techniques, and pest/disease management strategies.
- Proficiency in using GPS and basic mapping tools for field data collection.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively in challenging outdoor and remote conditions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working with diverse teams and communities.
- Fluency in Portuguese, both written and spoken, is essential for local communication and official documentation.
- Valid Mozambican driver's license (e.g., for motorcycles or light vehicles, as required for field mobility).
- Physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Agronomy, Environmental Science, or a closely related discipline.
- Prior experience with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques specifically applied in forestry.
- Familiarity with Mozambican forestry regulations, policies, and environmental standards.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills, particularly MS Office Suite (Word, Excel).
- Previous experience in supervising and leading small to medium-sized field teams.
