Job Description

We are seeking highly motivated, physically fit, and dedicated individuals to join our Akagera National Park team as Safari Park Rangers. This pivotal role involves protecting and preserving the park’s diverse wildlife and ecosystems, ensuring visitor safety, and contributing significantly to the overall success of our conservation efforts. As a Safari Park Ranger, you will be on the ground, serving as the first line of defense against poaching and illegal activities, diligently monitoring wildlife populations, and maintaining essential park infrastructure. You will work within a disciplined and close-knit team, often in challenging and remote conditions, requiring resilience, vigilance, and an unwavering commitment to our mission. This is more than just a job; it’s a calling for those deeply passionate about wildlife and wilderness conservation. Your daily activities will directly contribute to the security of iconic species such as lions, rhinos, elephants, and giraffes, the health of crucial habitats, and the sustainable development of tourism that benefits both nature and the people of Rwanda. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular patrols within Akagera National Park, both on foot and by vehicle, to detect and deter illegal activities such as poaching, illegal grazing, and logging.
  • Monitor wildlife populations, record sightings, and report on animal behavior, health, and any signs of distress or injury using established protocols.
  • Enforce park rules and regulations, ensuring visitor compliance, and maintaining a high standard of safety during safaris and other park activities.
  • Respond effectively and professionally to wildlife emergencies, including human-wildlife conflict incidents, and assist in wildlife rescue and relocation operations when required.
  • Maintain and repair essential park infrastructure, including roads, fences, ranger posts, and water points, ensuring operational readiness.
  • Collect vital ecological data, conduct basic field research, and assist conservation scientists in various ongoing field projects.
  • Participate actively in community engagement activities, educating local communities about the importance of conservation and the benefits of Akagera National Park.
  • Undergo regular and rigorous training in anti-poaching tactics, advanced first aid, bushcraft, land navigation, and firearms proficiency.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate reports on daily activities, incidents, observations, and patrol findings.
  • Collaborate closely and effectively with other rangers, park management, local law enforcement agencies, and community representatives.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in conservation, security, military, or law enforcement roles, preferably in a wilderness or protected area setting.
  • Strong physical fitness and stamina, capable of extended patrols in rugged terrain and varying weather conditions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to wildlife conservation and a foundational understanding of ecological principles.
  • Excellent observational skills, attention to detail, and sound judgment in critical situations.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a cohesive team in remote and challenging environments.
  • Basic knowledge of local flora and fauna, particularly the species found in Akagera National Park.
  • Fluent in Kinyarwanda; working knowledge of English or Swahili is a significant advantage.
  • Valid driver's license for motorcycles and/or 4×4 vehicles (manual transmission) and proven off-road driving experience.
  • High level of integrity, discipline, strong ethical conduct, and respect for authority and local customs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate or diploma in Wildlife Management, Conservation, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with GIS/GPS for navigation, mapping, and data collection.
  • First Aid/Wilderness First Responder certification or equivalent advanced medical training.
  • Proficiency in basic vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Previous experience working specifically in Akagera National Park or other protected areas in East Africa.
  • Proficiency in wildlife identification and tracking skills.
