Job Description

Kanimambo Farms is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterinarian specializing in Livestock Health to join our dynamic team in Maputo, Mozambique. This pivotal role involves overseeing the comprehensive health and well-being of our diverse livestock populations, including cattle, goats, and poultry. The ideal candidate will be responsible for implementing robust animal health programs, diagnosing and treating diseases, and ensuring compliance with all animal welfare and biosecurity standards across our facilities. You will play a critical role in preventative care, nutrition management, and breeding programs, contributing directly to the productivity and sustainability of our farm operations. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive animal health programs, including vaccination, deworming, and disease prevention protocols for all livestock.
  • Conduct regular veterinary examinations and diagnostics to ensure the early detection and treatment of illnesses among livestock populations.
  • Manage and oversee the health of cattle, goats, and poultry, providing expert care and advice on welfare and husbandry.
  • Perform surgical procedures and administer medication as necessary, following best practices in veterinary medicine.
  • Monitor and advise on livestock nutrition, ensuring optimal feed formulations and feeding practices for health and productivity.
  • Implement strict biosecurity measures and protocols to prevent the introduction and spread of infectious diseases within the farm.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all veterinary treatments, interventions, medication usage, and livestock health status.
  • Provide training and guidance to farm staff on animal handling, welfare, basic health monitoring, and emergency response.
  • Collaborate closely with farm management on breeding programs, reproductive health strategies, and overall herd improvement initiatives.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in veterinary science, animal nutrition, and sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Ensure full compliance with local and international animal welfare regulations and health standards.
  • Participate in emergency response for animal health crises or outbreaks.

Required Skills

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in livestock veterinary practice, particularly with cattle, goats, and poultry.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for animal health issues.
  • Excellent knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, and epidemiology.
  • Proficiency in administering vaccinations, medications, performing minor surgeries, and handling veterinary equipment.
  • Familiarity with common livestock diseases prevalent in Mozambique and effective treatment strategies.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English and Portuguese (both written and spoken).
  • Commitment to animal welfare and ethical veterinary practices.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-graduate qualification in Livestock Production, Epidemiology, Animal Nutrition, or a related field.
  • Experience with advanced reproductive technologies in livestock (e.g., artificial insemination, embryo transfer).
  • Knowledge of farm management software and data analysis for health monitoring and trend identification.
  • Previous experience working in a large-scale agricultural or commercial farming environment.
  • Valid professional license to practice veterinary medicine in Mozambique.
