Job Description

Sibanye-Stillwater is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Mining Engineer to join our dynamic team in Johannesburg, South Africa. This pivotal role will contribute significantly to the strategic planning, operational efficiency, and safety standards across our South African mining operations. The successful candidate will be instrumental in optimizing production processes, designing innovative mine plans, and implementing cutting-edge technologies to enhance productivity and sustainability. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including geology, rock engineering, and production, to ensure that all mining activities are executed safely, cost-effectively, and in compliance with industry regulations and company standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize detailed short-term, medium-term, and long-term mine plans and schedules, including stope designs, development layouts, and production forecasts, utilizing advanced mine planning software.
  • Conduct comprehensive feasibility studies, economic analyses, and risk assessments for new mining projects and operational improvements, presenting findings to senior management.
  • Monitor and analyze mining performance data, identifying areas for efficiency improvements, cost reduction, and enhanced productivity, and implement corrective actions as required.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all mining health and safety regulations (e.g., MHS Act), environmental standards, and company policies, actively promoting a culture of safety among all personnel.
  • Collaborate effectively with geology, rock engineering, ventilation, and other technical departments to integrate multidisciplinary inputs into robust mine designs and operational strategies.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to operational teams, overseeing the implementation of mine plans and ensuring optimal resource utilization and adherence to best practices.
  • Evaluate and recommend new mining technologies, equipment, and methodologies to improve operational efficiency, safety, and environmental impact.
  • Prepare detailed operational reports, presentations, and technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders, communicating complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff, fostering a learning environment and promoting professional growth within the team.
  • Manage project timelines and budgets for mining engineering initiatives, ensuring projects are completed on schedule and within financial parameters.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of proven experience as a Mining Engineer in an underground or open-pit mining environment
  • Valid Blasting Certificate for relevant mining operations (e.g., Fiery Mines, Open Cast)
  • Proficiency in mine planning software such as MineRP, Surpac, Datamine, or similar
  • Thorough understanding of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHS Act) and other relevant South African mining legislation
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented and multicultural environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-graduate degree in Mining Engineering or a related field
  • Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) or equivalent
  • Experience with advanced mining technologies and automation systems
  • Project management certification (e.g., PMP)
  • Fluency in additional South African official languages
