Novartis is seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatics Research Associate to join our dynamic R&D team in Basel. In this pivotal role, you will be at the forefront of leveraging large-scale biological datasets to uncover novel insights, identify potential therapeutic targets, and accelerate our understanding of disease mechanisms. You will design, develop, and implement robust bioinformatics pipelines and analytical tools to process, analyze, and interpret complex genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and other omics data generated from our diverse research programs. This position offers a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with experimental biologists, data scientists, and computational experts, transforming raw data into actionable biological knowledge that drives our innovative pipeline forward. If you thrive in a challenging, interdisciplinary environment focused on making a profound impact on human health, we encourage you to apply. This role is crucial for advancing our understanding of disease biology and identifying novel therapeutic strategies, directly impacting patient outcomes worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data (e.g., RNA-Seq, WGS, scRNA-Seq, spatial transcriptomics).
- Perform advanced statistical analysis and data visualization of complex biological datasets to identify significant patterns, biomarkers, and therapeutic insights.
- Collaborate closely with experimental scientists, clinicians, and other data specialists to understand research questions and provide tailored bioinformatics support and interpretation.
- Maintain and optimize existing bioinformatics tools, scripts, and databases, ensuring data integrity, reproducibility, and accessibility across projects.
- Present analytical results and findings clearly, concisely, and effectively to diverse scientific and non-scientific audiences through reports, presentations, and interactive dashboards.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in bioinformatics algorithms, computational methodologies, and emerging technologies in the field of life sciences research.
- Contribute to the preparation of scientific reports, publications, patent applications, and grant proposals, supporting the dissemination of our scientific discoveries.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R for data analysis, statistical modeling, and pipeline development.
- Strong understanding of molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, and fundamental bioinformatics principles.
- Extensive experience with various bioinformatics tools and public biological databases (e.g., NCBI, UCSC, Ensembl, UniProt, GTEx).
- Solid statistical knowledge and practical experience with relevant statistical packages and machine learning libraries.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in a Linux/Unix command-line environment and with version control systems (e.g., Git).
- Proven ability to process, analyze, and interpret large-scale, complex biological datasets, translating data into meaningful biological conclusions.
- Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, analytical, and strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Data Science, or a closely related scientific field.
- Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform) and high-performance computing (HPC) environments for large-scale data analysis.
- Familiarity with advanced machine learning or deep learning techniques applied to biological data.
- Previous experience working in drug discovery, pharmaceutical research and development, or a biotech industry setting.
- Knowledge of specific therapeutic areas such as oncology, immunology, neuroscience, or cardiovascular disease.
Perks & Benefits
- Competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance.
- Opportunity to work at the forefront of medical innovation with a global leader dedicated to scientific discovery.
- Access to state-of-the-art research facilities, cutting-edge technologies, and vast biological data resources.
- Robust professional development and continuous learning opportunities, including internal training and external conferences.
